First Grade News
For the week of October 9 - 12, 2018
Dear Families,
Today we sent our symbolic butterflies on their way to Mexico. It was very exciting! Just like real monarchs, our butterflies will travel almost three thousand miles to reach their destination. First graders have been learning about the monarchs’ migration. They have also been learning what it means to be an ambassador. Ambassadors help people from different countries learn to appreciate one another, communicate and work together. As a class, we created a butterfly that will teach our new friends in a school in Mihuacan, Mexico what makes Cabot, Vermont a special place to live. Ask your children to share what they added to our beautiful butterfly. You can check it out on our class website! We have also been learning to say a few words in Spanish. We can greet another - Hola, mi amigo!- and count to ten. We have been learning a great deal from our mariposas!
In math, we extended our number line thinking to 100! We learned a new math game called Roll, Say and Cover which challenged our grouping, adding and counting skills. We also continued our work with graphing and comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal to. First graders are amazing mathematicians!
Have a wonderful fall weekend,
Donna Ferrario
